Health groups are health organizations that often receive grants from the United States government to help improve the health of local residents. The money can be spent on any number of health problems facing communities. Communities facing problems such as obesity, infant mortality, cancer, diabetes and hypertension benefit from health groups targeting those problems. Once the health groups receive grants, they can begin developing programs that help the community get healthier. Some programs are designed to identify the problems. For example, so health groups do testing for diabetes or hypertension. Only through diagnosis can treatment begin and the person begins to get healthier.

Some health groups target areas that are rural, while some concentrate on the lower income, inner city neighborhoods. Health groups that target infant mortality have had success in lowering those numbers through a number of methods. Some lower income mothers lack the correct number of prenatal doctor visits. Health groups focusing on this can help educate the mothers on the importance of those visits, thus possibly decreasing the infant mortality rate in that community. Many of the health groups even make home visits to assure the mothers-to-be received the proper medical attention as well as pregnancy education.

Some health groups also concentrate on lowering rates of cancer and heart attacks by focusing on tobacco cessation. If given the proper counseling and guidance, life long smokers are able to quit. Upon stopping smoking, their have reduced their chances of lung cancer and heart attacks almost immediately. Tobacco cessation health groups also focus on stopping children and teens from starting smoking.

Finally, health groups are great a promoting - health! Many people eat the wrong things and don't exercise at all. Health groups focus on more nutritional meals and the benefits of exercise. Small changes the people make in their diet and daily exercise regimen can make a big difference in their overall health.
