Group Therapy ActivitiesThere are many different types of people in therapy. Some people are in physical therapy for injuries they have suffered. Some people are recovering from some type of addiction, such as alcohol or drugs. Elderly people in nursing homes often need therapy to maintain their physical independence. Regardless of what type of therapy a person is in, they can benefit from group therapy activities for many reasons. It may take a while, but members usually begin to feel free to interact with the group. This gives the individual the support and comfort they need from group members to know that others are experiencing the same thing they are. Group therapy members often feel alone, but participating in group activities can help alleviate that feeling. Members usually build a feeling of trust among themselves. When participating in group therapy, there is usually a trained professional to help lead the group activities. Group therapy activities can include any number of things. Patients who are recovering from accidents and need to work their muscles can benefit from any number of group therapy activities. Patients can bounce balls to each other to use their arm muscles as a form of group therapy. Patients, especially those suffering from arthritis, can make crafts as a part of group therapy activities to help their dexterity. People who have suffered from strokes can also do crafts as a part of their rehabilitation. Another example of a good craft for rehabilitation is making tissue paper flowers. Those recovering from drug or alcohol addition can benefit from a group therapy activity as simple as exercise. The physical movement helps them keep from getting depressed and will help them feel better about themselves. Some facilities have the group members go outside to participate in group therapy activities such as swimming, sailing or retreat trips. |
